International Transport Forum 2011 Transport Achievement Award

The 2011 Transport Achievement Award will recognise projects or initiatives that demonstrate excellence in identifying and efficiently meeting the transport need of their clients. It aims to highlight the importance of taking seriously the transport needs of society, both in relation to personal mobility to ensure ready access of goods within communities. The International Transport Forum at the OECD is offering this prestigious award jointly with the International Association for Public Transport (UITP), the International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations (FIATA) and the European Association for Forwarding, Transport, Logistics and Customs Services (CLECAT).

Applications for the Award are open to all modes of transport: operations, service providers, authorities, and suppliers and/or manufacturers, within International Transport Forum member and observer countries. It will be awarded in the presence of Transport Ministers from around the globe at the International Transport Forum’s annual summit to be held 25-27 May 2011 in Leipzig, Germany.

UAE to join ATA Carnet chain system

The United Arab Emirates will join the ATA Carnet system early this year, becoming the 69th country to accept and issue special documents exempting certain categories of temporary imports from duties and taxes. The acronym ATA is a combination of the French and English abbreviations for “temporary admission.” The ATA Carnet system is overseen by the International Chamber of Commerce and the World Customs Organization. The UAE will begin by accepting goods for trade shows and fairs. There are about 200 trade shows per year in Dubai. The new rules will make it easier for companies bringing displays and samples to the trade show. The Dubai Chamber of Commerce will assume responsibility for issuing and guaranteeing Carnets throughout the UAE.

TSA sets January 2012 deadline for screening belly hold cargo

The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) proposes to require the air cargo industry to screen 100 per cent of the cargo carried on passenger aircraft bound for the US by the end of this year. Previously, TSA had said the deadline for screening 100 per cent of international inbound cargo had been delayed until at least 2013, given the complex challenges associated with screening international inbound cargo carried on passenger aircraft. However, given recent global events related to air cargo security, TSA has alerted passenger carriers and their supply chain partners that 100 per cent screening of international inbound cargo will be required by the end of the year. Carriers will have 30-45 days to comment on the new screening requirement, and TSA will evaluate the industry comments before making the requirement effective.
