The implementation of the ‘reset programme’ and the move to Geneva have seen FIATA recalibrate its relationships with a variety of international and regional governmental and nongovernmental bodies and institutions, including the World Customs Organization (WCO), UNCTAD, UNECE and ITC to name a few. One of the key changes has been the interface between FIATA and the WCO. From 1 January 2021, FIATA will now be directly representing itself at the WCO with a strong presence led by Customs Affairs Institute (CAI) Chair, Steve Parker, and CAI Manager, Andrea Tang.

The launch of the first periodic review of the E-Commerce Package by the World Customs Organization (WCO) provides a valuable opportunity for FIATA members to actively shape and facilitate the future of international trade. This is also a chance to ensure that regulatory processes are feasible for all actors in the supply chain. FIATA, through its Customs Affairs Institute (CAI), is currently working on an in-depth review of all relevant elements of the Package, to submit detailed proposals to the WCO by July 2021. In addition, CAI is currently working on the review of two annexes of the Package regarding the provision of data.
FIATA also continues engaging on COVID-19 vaccine distribution and is working closely with partner organizations (such as WCO, TIACA and IATA) to ensure appropriate responses and guidance for the industry. Following the set of considerations for freight forwarders on the effective delivery of vaccines published earlier this year, FIATA continues working on relevant topics within its institutes and bodies to ensure a supply chain fit to meet global demand, both now and beyond COVID-19. FIATA is also actively promoting the need for a level playing field and the role of freight forwarders in vaccine delivery in various media outlets. With the first phases of vaccine delivery managed mostly by large multinational companies, FIATA considers this time vital to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to prepare for the challenges to come. This will be in the next phases when SMEs will have a greater role to play with the market democratization of vaccines.

The proof of concept for the e-FIATA Bill of Lading (eFBL) tracking solution will kick off on 23 February. Most participants have been identified and confirmed: four software providers (TMS and digital trade documents solutions), one identity management platform (Forgerock), and one document tracking solution (Trakk).
FIATA’s proof of concept will focus on testing the creation of eFBLs through participating TMSs, as well as testing FIATA document tracking solution. This will have a stamped QR code and unique number, which will certify the validity of the document, the integrity of its content, as well as the identity of the document issuer. The full lifecycle of the document will be analysed. It will also test the transfer of the eFBL to different stakeholders, through participating digital trade document solutions.
