Advisory Body on Safety and Security

Safety and Security affects us all every day as we go about our lives. The impact on business is even more pronounced and affects every part of work, from travel, environment and especially so to freight forwarders as we move cargo around the world. To this extent it is imperative that FIATA as a global body embraces the requirements of security within its various institutes.

During the Headquarters Session in spring of 2009, reflecting the importance of Security in today’s world the ad hoc Working Group Security was transformed into an Advisory Body (Advisory Body Security Matters). In 2013 the Advisory Body was given responsibility for reporting on dangerous goods matters and was rebranded as ABSS (Advisory Body Safety and Security) to reflect this.

In the primary aim of the ABSS is to support the various FIATA institutes with up to date information on the very many international rules and regulations pertaining to security and safety governing the freight forwarding industry as it impacts on aspects including Air freight, Ocean freight, Multi-modal, Dangerous Goods Handling and Training.

The Advisory Body Security and Safety is made up of persons within the freight forwarding industry from America, Europe and Asia in order to cover the global impact security has on our industry. In addition the members in their own rights have involvement in other Security and dangerous goods groups, thus enabling the Body to serve as an interface between various organizations related to and working with FIATA members.

It should be remembered that the body is an advisory body only and therefore not involved in policy making. Institutes within FIATA such as the Multimodal Transport Institute or the Airfreight Institute may and do ask for the group's body's advice and support in their deliberations. The Advisory Body Security and Safety meet twice a year at the FIATA HQ Session in Zurich and at the Annual FIATA World Congress. Members of the ABSS also speak on behalf of FIATA at various Industry meetings and represent FIATA on various industry, regulatory and governmental committees and working groups.
